Byke valet parking July 1, 2008

The SFBC sponsors valet bike parking for just about every event that qualifies as an event in San Francisco. I volunteered for a two hour shift Sunday morning for the Pride Parade. Lots of pretty bikes and people in varying degrees of costume. Naked does count as a costume, right? In any case, hooray for byke pride!

Vineman Aquabike March 22, 2008

Okay, kids, I finally found an event that actually makes me nervous. The Vineman AquaBike is two thirds of a half ironman – a 1.2 mile swim followed by a 56 mile bike ride. I easily rode 40 miles Sunday and swam 0.8 miles on Monday morning, so I know I can do this race come August.
A big part of my motivation in training for this race is the optional fundraising for Vineman Cancer Charities. As most of you know, both my brother and aunt were diagnosed with cancer last year. I’m extremely grateful that they are both survivers, but I know that not every cancer patient is “lucky” enough to come down with a cancer that responds well to treatment. I never met my maternal grandmother, who died of cancer before I was born. A good friend’s ex recently died from a fast moving lung cancer – she barely had a chance to say her goodbyes. So it is in memory of all those who have lost their battle with cancer, and in gratitude for all those who have won their battle with cancer than I am training for and raising money for this race.

Mt. Sutro December 2, 2007

I spent a fun fun morning “bouldering” on Mt. Sutro. The Stowers version of bouldering involves arming oneself with loppers and a pickax, scrambling up the hillside on Mt. Sutro, locating large rocks, and sending them crashing down the hill to the trail, where volunteers then carried, wheelbarrowed, or rolled (in order of increasing rock weight) the specimens to the retaining walls we constructed today.*

I also ran into my acupuncturist, whom I haven’t seen in ages, but she’s expanding her practice to our canine friends, including house calls.

Click here for still pictures, and check out a video of the work we do on YouTube. And of course, thanks to Nature in the City and One Brick for organizing and providing volunteers. An even bigger thanks to the Mt. Sutro Stewards for providing pizza and home brewed beer afterwards.

* In one or two cases, I may have slightly miscalculated certain momentum and friction relationships and may have suffered a vivid flashback of recent pop culture. But for the record, this is all conjecture and no boys were harmed in the building of these walls.

Take that, suckers! November 18, 2007

A mass of over 200 people showed up to restore Stern Grove Park this morning. I volunteered through One Brick, but SF Connect, Lincoln HS, the Police Academy, the Department of Public Works, the Department of Corrections, SF Greenery, and the Academy of Arts all had strong showings.

I spent much of this morning decimating the population of elm suckers and ivy runners in the historic barbeque pit area of the grove. I can hear the botanically inclined objecting that I’m trimming neither ivy nor elm in the picture, but nonetheless, my five minutes of redwood time turned out to be an unbeatable photo op. What can I say? Redwoods are the media darlings of the plant kingdom.

According to this story on SFGate, it looks efforts the massive response of civilians who want to help in the cleanup efforts finally prompted some action. If you’d like to help, check out the Baykeeper site – they’re running a hazmat training session in Golden Gate Park tomorrow night.

Many people want to help the clean up efforts have been sent home – some under threat of arrest – because the oil is extremely toxic and hazardous material training is not available to would be volunteers. Click here for the story.

You can donate or volunteer at International Bird Rescue Center in the East Bay. Donations of cash, old towels, sheets, Pedialyte, and infant formula are needed.

Trail Maintenance on Mt. Sutro August 7, 2007

I spend a fair bit of time hiking local trails. One Brick coordinates various and sundry volunteering opportunities, so I was glad to learn I could spend a Saturday morning improving trails on Mt. Sutro. I spent a couple of hours clipping the ivy strangling the eucalyptus trees, then moved dirt around to level the trail. You can click here for more photos, none of which actually show me working.
This is an ongoing effort. Volunteers meet on the first Saturday of every month, so check them out if you have a strong back and are in need of some contemplative work.
