The Legion of Honor September 7, 2009

Legion of Honor

The Legion of Honor has never been my favorite museum in San Francisco – I generally prefer more modern work.  Wandering around that museum today, I realized why – the galleries were filled with archetypal virgins and whores.  All the artists were male, and it was difficult for me to appreciate the works of a society that marginalized woman to such a staggering degree.

My experience at this museum reminded me of a recent blog post from Amy Stein’s Photography Blog discussing the glorification of violence against women in art.  It also bears on what I was trying to communicate in my last post about the power of bringing more voices to the public awareness.

If we simply marvel in their technical brilliance of several centuries of European painters, we are only learning a small fraction of what their work might teach us.

SF Botanical Gardens September 4, 2009

I made a spontaneous trip to the botanical gardens earlier this week, and happened to roll up right as the daily guided tour began. It was cool hearing a bit about the history of the gardens, behind the scenes activities, and the general love our guide held for all things growing.

I think this might be one of the favorite pics that I've ever taken.

Can you see the baby quail? There was only one chick, which means sad things for this quail family.

never promised me a rose garden 013

After a particularly rough day last week, I swung by the rose garden on my way home.  I only had my phone camera with me, but you can see a few of my pics here.  Unfortunately, red saturated out the phone, so I deleted most of the red rose pics.  In any case, the garden is in full glory right now and worth a visit, especially if you need a reminder of the beautiful things in life.

Fun in Girls Shorts, and one little mutiny June 22, 2009

San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival

Last weekend, I visited the ever fabulous Castro Theatre to watch Fun in Girls’ Shorts, a collection of short films showing in the San Francisco LGBT Film Festival.  The films had the audience laughing hysterically over dating malfunctions, therapy gone horribly awry, a femme sex toy reclamation squad, and a U-Haul rap video to end all U-Haul rap videos.

But nestled in among all the hilarity was Little Mutinies, an inelegant world with upside down moralities and wonderfully complicated, multifaceted characters that left me wanting to know so much more about them.  Look for more good things to come from StarkPowers Productions!

SundayStreets_June09

I hit up Sunday Streets with two really good friends yesterday.  We toodled around through the throngs, grabbed lunch, and generally enjoyed the sunshine.

I saw that slightly tongue in cheek because Saturday was a spectacularly good day, and I wish I could have that sort of weekend day more often!  I began with an early morning bike ride along the Great Highway and through the Golden Gate Park.  At that hour, there’s very little traffic and the only people out are my fellow fitness nuts, training for the AIDS ride or their next marathon or what have you, and the air smelled of new plant growth.  I love this time of year.  :)

Afterwards, I met a good friend for a leisurely lunch at the Universal Cafe.  I had the turkey bacon avocado brie sandwich.  Know that brie, bacon, and avocado are three of my favorite foods, so this was heaven on a plate for me.   After lunch we wandered down the street for more chit chat and relaxation at the Coffee Bar.

Happy sigh.

troll2Hey everyone, sorry for the slow posting.  Last week was a whirlwind! I’m easing back into it with the troll of the Bay Bridge, added after the ’89 earthquake to keep the bridge safe.   And here you thought all trolls did was sow discontent and malaise throughout the web!   Click here for the story.

Urban hike January 11, 2009

A fuzzy iPhone pic of last night’s bridge to bridge (and back) full moon urban hike, and my longest hike ever at 12.5 miles. The company, views, wine and snacks were all lots of fun, but I’ve made the following mental note: cycling and skating fitness do not help with the foot pounding of hiking on concrete.
