Synchronized swimming August 24, 2008

Those of you who know me may not guess that I’ve totally been loving synchronized swimming at the Olympics.* My interest in the sport was piqued after I read this article on SFGate a couple of months ago. Turns out that many of the women on the team are from the Bay Area, and they were practicing at a gymnasium that I have driven past countless times. Video of their practice:

And if you’d like to see what it takes to win the gold medal, click here.

*Precisely one friend has actually seen me do synchronized swimming. There was also a pool full of witnesses, but they were laughing too hard for me to even try to collect names. In any case, I’m fairly certain that the statute of limitations has run out on that one.

Still hot May 17, 2008

It’s hot again today. The cats aren’t moving, and the high point of my day was swimming in the bay. 50 degree water never felt so good, and I wasn’t the only one who felt that way today. Lots of families wading and playing in the sand at Aquatic Park.

Although I promised a profanity filled post describing my first swim in Aquatic Park this season, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I feared. Yup, the first few minutes had me questioning my sanity, but after I warmed up, it was a great swim. Swimming in the bay really is a pleasure that’s just about impossible to explain – you either get it, or you don’t.

I admit it, I’m being a wuss this year. The bay is cold, damnit, and for a while I had the perfectly valid excuse of building up strength in my gimpy shoulder. But the shoulder’s doing great – I easily swam the full 1.2 mi half ironman distance this morning. I must admit that the fictional New Englanders have shamed me a little bit.

So coming soon is a profanity filled post describing the effects of 50 deg water on the human body. ;)

Vineman Aquabike March 22, 2008

Okay, kids, I finally found an event that actually makes me nervous. The Vineman AquaBike is two thirds of a half ironman – a 1.2 mile swim followed by a 56 mile bike ride. I easily rode 40 miles Sunday and swam 0.8 miles on Monday morning, so I know I can do this race come August.
A big part of my motivation in training for this race is the optional fundraising for Vineman Cancer Charities. As most of you know, both my brother and aunt were diagnosed with cancer last year. I’m extremely grateful that they are both survivers, but I know that not every cancer patient is “lucky” enough to come down with a cancer that responds well to treatment. I never met my maternal grandmother, who died of cancer before I was born. A good friend’s ex recently died from a fast moving lung cancer – she barely had a chance to say her goodbyes. So it is in memory of all those who have lost their battle with cancer, and in gratitude for all those who have won their battle with cancer than I am training for and raising money for this race.

Swim from Alcatraz! March 21, 2008

Whoo-hoo! My swimming is going really well this season – none of the shoulder problems that kept me out of the water last summer – so I just signed up for the 28th Annual Alcatraz Challenge in August. 1.5 miles of frigid water, strong currents, and invisible submerged creatures. What could possibibly be more fun?

Which leads to my next question: When are you signing up? ;)

If the answer is um, no, not this year, thankyouverymuch, you wouldn’t mind greeting me on shore with a towel, a thermos of warm beverage, and a few thousand calories of protein, would you? Thanks!

New pool February 6, 2008

My gym/pool closed down, and the community pools I used to go to are extremely crowded. I’m stoked to find a new pool with decent hours, enough lanes for everyone, and a friendly, outgoing crowd of regulars. Thank you, Swimmers Guide. :)

It’s no wonder that I wanted a nap today – it’s cold and rainy out, and I hit the pool at 7:30am. That’s right, 7:30am on a weekend – community pools have ludicrous hours. However, I hadn’t intended to sleep for as long as I did, and the blame for that rests squarely on Mosca’s furry little shoulders. He curled up next to me on the couch and purred…and purred…and purred. You gotta watch out for species that sleep twenty hours a day.

Sea Lions Attack! August 6, 2007

My 2006 open water swims in Aquatic Park came to a screeching halt after this bit of news broke:

Story on SFGate

I found myself suddenly grateful for the head cold that kept me out of the bay while the sea lion ran amuck.

There is no glory in becoming sea lion lunch.
