Prom Dress Rugby! February 23, 2009

The Fog and All Blues joined forces for a rather moist game of prom dress rugby yesterday. Most of my friends looked out the window and decided to stay inside for the day, but one brave soul and I donned our rain gear and headed out to Treasure Island to catch the action and the fashion.
Now please excuse me as I don my sartorialist hat. The lady wearing the pink skirted tank bubble dress gets my vote for best dressed of the match. The full skirt allowed for unfettered sprints while retaining its structure and lines even when sopping wet.
Many of the players made excellent use of bright yellow tape – a cheeky nod to 80s fashion if I do say so myself – to transform a dress too small to zip up into an avant garde work of art.
My verdict: a lighthearted match and a must for any street fashion photographer worth his or her salt.
Saturday’s a rugby day October 5, 2008

I headed over to Treasure Island yesterday to watch a friend play rugby. Not too much out there besides some housing and a few pitches, but the view of SF is fantastic.
A kinder, gentler sport July 27, 2008

Last winter, I found out about a women’s hockey team in the area. Kinder and gentler than rugby, but lemme tellya, I look huge on the ice.
They hosted a learn to play hockey day yesterday, so I borrowed a particularly stinky set of gear, did a few drills, and then totally forgot that I barely know how to skate and definitely don’t know how to stop (ka-thunk!) when they let us scrimmage.
The season starts in September – I think it’ll be fun. ;)
NPR: Making changes July 15, 2008

So much of the world’s news involves deadlock of one kind or another, two parties so convinced that they are right that they will feud for years, decades, and centuries rather than compromise and create something better. This NPR story reported on one man who took the opposite approach and is transforming lives and society.
And wouldn’t you know it? Rugby is involved. :)
Flashback – the college years January 15, 2008

This get up was for the rugby formal…I panicked because I had no dresses, so my date Jason took me shopping and did my hair and make up. I borrowed the boots from a friend who did drag. I assure you that nobody recognized me.
This was my 19th birthday at Cooter Browns. Louisiana raised the drinking age to 21 the year I turned 20, so I spent my 20th in the dorm, bitter as all hell.
Staycation December 31, 2007

The solo part of my staycation – that’s stay at home vacation, folks – ends tomorrow when my little brother arrives just in time for a New Years Eve party. Definitely a college student skill.
A friend recovering from knee surgery bribed me with free movie tickets, so we caught a matinee of Sweeney Todd. Makes me want to put together a meat pie, it does. :)
I just wrapped up a long overdue organizational rampage in the spare room…the piles of stuff to be recycled or trashed did not quite meet Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout proportions…no rubbery blubbery macaroni, for instance. In addition to piles of software and owners manual to all sorts of electronics and computers that I no longer own, rosters from the Half Moons and Morris Pride rugby teams, a CIPP form from ’99, a FAFSA application for the ’97-’98 school year, a letter my dad sent in April of ’04, and my PSAT scores all surfaced from my file folder. What would the archaeologists think?

I’ll vouch that flying a trike is a pretty awesome experience, but this is a whole new level of cool. From Yahoo’s Week in Photos.
Addendum: My mother would like to point out that some of those birds are whooping cranes and probably part of Operation Migration. I would like to present the state of the rugby fields I used to play on as strong evidence that the Canada geese do not need any help with their southern migration.

So my cool thing for today is this print from Katarina Karlic, sold at 20×200, and soon to be delivered to my home.
I love the soft colors, the textures, the use of space, and most of all, the possibilities suggested by the composition. One source of inspiration to the artist is the Missed Connections section of Craigslist. I haven’t read them in years, but I still remember the interplay of desire and regret played out over and over again in this space of relative anonymity.
It’s fascinating how the anonymity of the internet can transform into something entirely different – real connections between people. Many of the important people in my life I’ve met through postings on Craigslist – rugby recruiting ads, personal ads, ads for friendship, forums.
There are also communities of people I’ve never met in person, but whom I know a great deal about, for they post their experiences with certain universals of life – loss, illness, death, love – in a “secret” forum that I’ve been reading for almost five years. I find it fascinating to watch people as they grow, as they suffer, as they find meaning in life and support from each other. In my experience of this forum, the internet strips away much of the drama, leaving just an experience of humanity.

I spent my birthday at a jello wrestling fundraiser for the womens Fog Rugby team. I believe that the last time I laughed that hard was when my rugby team had a chocolate pudding wrestling fundraiser many, many years ago.

Several years ago, my rugby teammates hosted a party. A party with a theme. Dress as your polar opposite, or the hosts would dress you using items from very “special” costume box. Most of my teammates showed up in various girly costumes, but I chose another route. That of the card carrying PETA vegan. Oh yeah…
