I straddle two worlds – in the first, the past and future crowd out the present. The doors to the other world open to me when I lace up my skates for a game of hockey. This world is the present, and I am one with it.

mina samuelsMina Samuels is writing Run Like a Girl: How Strong Women Make Happy Lives and is looking for women’s stories. I sent her a brief outline of how sports have saved my life – brief because the full story would be an entire book by itself.

As I typed out my e-mail to her, I was struck not only by how important sports have been to my physical and mental health, but how they saved me from carrying  on the family legacy of substance abuse.  I’m even more amazed that, in the midst of all the anti-sport hysteria my family was flinging at me, I was somehow able to listen to the voice inside of me that let me know that what I was doing was right, healthy, and was my path to a better life.

I hope that Run Like  a Girl makes it easier for girls and women to follow their hearts and play sports without fear, taunting, or recrimination from their families or communities.  Read this blog post about an aspiring hockey player and tell me that this book is not long overdue.

The Aggravated Antelopes

2009-09-05 hockey

I joined up with the Aggravated Antelopes to play a Labor Day hockey tournament last weekend.  My highlights:

*wearing silly antlers on my helmet

* getting cut off from scoring again after reaching the maximum number of allowed goals in one game

* goring the opposing goalie during shoot out

* watching one of my teammates make an awesome goal during the above shoot out

ice pirates skate or dieI’ve already posted about this on Facebook and Twitter, but what can I say?  I’m totally jazzed about the design and can’t wait for my order to arrive!

Our hockey team monikered ourselves with Ice Pirates this season, and it’s the most fun team name I’ve ever played under.  Lots of “arrrrrs” emanate from the ice and the captain includes a pirate joke on the evite for each game.  Good times.

ice oasis memorial day tournamentMy first hockey tournament, and my first time playing on a co-ed team.  I normally play in a beginner league, so it was a lot of fun to hit the ice with players who were much faster and more skilled than I am. I’ve got a couple new moves I can’t wait to break out on the ice next week!

(And yeah, we placed fourth out of four.  Here’s for an uninterrupted loosing streak!)

Ice Hockey RinkWhen it comes to cycling, I’m fast for a slow rider.  While there are many people I can drop, there are many, many more who blow by me in a blur.

So it was a nice treat on Sunday when I realized that I’m the fastest person on the ice in my division.  Granted, it’s an all womens beginner division, but it’s still kinda cool and I intend to thoroughly enjoy myself while it lasts!

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted because I’ve been out conquering the world.  I had an awesome last three days filled with mountain biking (and a deliciously greasy burger), late night hockey practice followed by an early morning 70 mi ride with the Velo Girls.  For the first half of the ride, I felt like I was hauling about fifty extra pounds around, but after a leisurely and large lunch, my legs kicked back into gear and I had an awesome ride.

Today, predictably enough, was about eating.  Two breakfasts and lunch with friends at Big Nate’s BBQ.  And just because I hadn’t had enough fun, I hopped on my bike and rode to the gym for a short workout.  So another 13 miles in 90+ weather.  I had to lie motionless under the ceiling fan for about half an hour after that!  Mosca was also prostrate from the heat, so I’m chalking it up to a bonding moment with my cat.

I’m whipping up posts for this week – stay tuned!

Whoo-hoooooo!  Somewhere between last night and my previous game, the hockey skills fairy paid me a visit.  I scored three goals in the first period, and then the goalie got wise to me.  Very exciting! :)

Despite a shortage of players (damn Superbowl), I had an incredibly fun game last night.  Highlights:

scoring a goal, multiple shots on goal

using my skates to kick the puck – that’s a brand new skill for me

making a good pass to an open teammate halfway across the ice

learning the finer nuances of the offsides rule (hopefully no more of that penalty for me)

I’ve finally gotten my fitness back on track and am loving the workouts – I even scored my first hockey goal last Friday!  Unfortunately, my appetite equation has an exponential in it somewhere…Here’s a quick rundown of yesterday’s menu:

4 eggs, 2 tortillas, & cheese for breakfast

sushi for lunch #1

pizza for lunch #2

peanuts for afternoon snack #1

beef jerky for afternoon snack #2

trail mix for afternoon snack #3

pork chop and salad for dinner #1

oatmeal & strawberries for dinner #2

In any case, I’m leaning heavily on my two current favorite cookbooks: Fields of Greens for their amazing salads and the Sonoma Diet for quick cooking tasty meals.
