Montebello mtb ride September 2, 2009

Pics from last Sunday’s 20mi with 3k’ of climbing ride on the Canyon Trail in the Montebello Open Space Preserve. This is by far the longest mountain bike ride I’ve ever done and the temps were in the 80s – that’s damn toasty in my world. I drank an entire camelback plus two bottles of water and would like to give a huge shout out to whoever got Nuun on the market. I had to cut last week’s mountain bike trip at Skeggs short because I was getting lightheaded in the heat, but was pretty much unfazed by the heat this time. Yay.
I was also pleased that all the riding I’ve done at Arastradero OSP prepared me pretty well for most of the technical stuff on the Canyon Trail – I successfully rode a bunch of it and then hike n biked the rest. Not bad for only a year of mountain biking!

Post lunch. A pastrami sandwhich has never tasted so good!

O thank god, the top! We mistakenly took a brutally steep & exposed fire road up the last section instead of the nice, shady singletrack we wanted, but it was all good once we saw these vistas/knew we were mostly done climbing for the day.

I ended the ride with salt on my face and dirt on my legs. Pretty good sign of a great day.

This looks way more dramatic than it actually was. I hit a patch of sand at the bottom of a hill and went down. I landed in knee high grass (good), but since it’s July in California, the grass is bone dry and prickly. I spent the rest of the evening removing blades of grass from my shorts, my jersey, my bike, and even my sports bra and socks!
I almost wish the story of the wreck was as impressive as the bruising…I’m tempted to invent something involving a mountain lion and a heroic rescue, but alas, I’m lacking any scrapes that could pass as tooth or claw marks.

What I would do for even a fraction of the skills this guy has! Maybe I’ll start by learning how to do a wheelie…
24 hr mountain bike race! May 6, 2009

Last weekend, many of my friends raced the 24 or 8 hour mountain bike races in miserable, muddy, sufferfest conditions and had an absolute blast.
Naturally, my interest was piqued, so as we speak, I’m putting together an all woman team for the Coolest 24 Boggs race. I am so excited! This is going to rock. :)

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted because I’ve been out conquering the world. I had an awesome last three days filled with mountain biking (and a deliciously greasy burger), late night hockey practice followed by an early morning 70 mi ride with the Velo Girls. For the first half of the ride, I felt like I was hauling about fifty extra pounds around, but after a leisurely and large lunch, my legs kicked back into gear and I had an awesome ride.
Today, predictably enough, was about eating. Two breakfasts and lunch with friends at Big Nate’s BBQ. And just because I hadn’t had enough fun, I hopped on my bike and rode to the gym for a short workout. So another 13 miles in 90+ weather. I had to lie motionless under the ceiling fan for about half an hour after that! Mosca was also prostrate from the heat, so I’m chalking it up to a bonding moment with my cat.
I’m whipping up posts for this week – stay tuned!

Once upon a time that was an insult, but the tide is turning. This is part of a mountain bike series of t shirts that includes slogans like “dirty girl” and “lubed and ready.” For more, click here.
Velo Girls Mountain Bike Clinic March 23, 2009

That little yellow dot on the bottom left is me. :) I attended the Velo Girls Mountain Bike skills at Arastradero OSP last Saturday. Despite the weather reports, it rained only briefly during the clinic, and we were treated with an amazing rainbow during the ride.
I’ve been a little timid on my mountain bike since my wreck last year, and a big part of mountain biking is confidence. Learning and practicing skills for bike handling, bunny hopping, and switchbacks made a huge difference – I couldn’t believe how much more comfortable I felt on my bike by the end of the day. Lorri is a fun, knowledgable, and encouraging teacher. Two huge thumbs up for this clinic!

One more update: I followed up with a sports med doc, and the verdict is: whiplash, mild irritation of the rotator cuff, and damn lucky. I concur!

Okay, obviously I’m talking a tough game there. The next pic is slightly more accurate.

I’m still in a world of hurt, but it’s a much smaller world of hurt than it was the first few days. I really hope to be off the opiates soon!
