Cycles-PerfectaI’ve been coveting this Mucha print for a couple of years now and am thrilled to finally own it!  I’ve mentally bookmarked the Mucha museum in Prague for a possible visit when I’m there this fall.

HeatherGlassyGreenI also ordered this Heather Brown print, which reminds me how silly it is that I have not yet been to Hawaii!

Apartment Therapy shows a lot of really beautiful spaces, but this one really caught my eye.  I’m in awe of all the beautiful things they have in their house, and how well everything works together.  And I’m not even usually a fan of midcentury modern!

Sometimes I love the internet. The odds of finding a copy of the 1904 Ernst Haeckel‘s Kunstformen der Natur at my local library?  Practically nonexistent.  But a little browsing on the internet got me to this page of illustrations free and available for download.

It’s rare that I find a shop that I find myself wanted one of each, thanks, but Viva Terra is it. A few of the many items I’m loving:

flower-curtain We’re having a bit of much needed rain here, and I’m feeling a bit mopey about missing out on cycling time.  Here’s to a prettier outlook on life.

This image is from the fascinating blog Morbid Anatomy, which focuses on “the the Interstices of Art and Medicine, Death and Culture.” Definitely not for the squeamish!

Glass flame working at the Crucible March 19, 2009

I don’t know about you, but my inner child is such a pyro.  That’s the one really good part about my childhood in Texas – the campfires, the fireworks, the black powder…and the flame tests we did in high school chemistry definitely got the ball rolling on my career path as a chemist.  I still delight in using our propane torch to clean off lab equipment.

Since my department failed its mission to hold a holiday party even vaguely in the holiday season, I took the opportunity to organize an outing at – pardon my inner child here – omigod!  At the Crucible!!!  Could you just die?!?!?!?

We divided into two groups to learn different glass techniques, and I bee lined for glass flame working.  Yep, that’s the one where you sit down in front of a 5000 F propane oxygen torch.  >:-}

Our instructors, Jay and Tara, were both really great (check out their art) and I really dug what Jay had to say when he talked a bit about what a meditative act flame working  is, how everything else in the world just disappears when he sits down in front of the flame, and how people really need to have some sort of creative outlet in their lives. I got a taste of that as I made my projects:

So now I’m mulling over setting up a flame working workshop in my garage.  So tempting…I just need to figure out A) how to ventilate the garage and B) exactly when I’ll have time to fit this in around all my other hobbies!  At the very least, a class at the Crucible would make an awesome vacation activity.
